Google, a company known for their interesting interview questions, was just shy of the top twenty. eBay and Amazon interview questions are actually harder.
The hardest interview of all is at consulting company McKinsey — not surprising when you consider that its business is based on answering hard questions.
Some interesting stats: many of the companies ranked as very difficult, are also ranked highly in overall employee satisfaction. Also, while some of the companies had difficult interview processes, the interviewee said they still had a positive experience.
“Preparation is necessary. Look at a list of competency based questions and answer them based on your experiences, highlighting your roles, your goals and outcomes. If you are not comfortable with competency based questions, be prepared.” -assistant manager candidate

“Overall the process was good. I like that they give you feedback even if you dont make it to the next round. The feedback was really helpful and I understand exactly what I did wrong and why. The interviewer really knew his stuff as he had actually worked on this case.” -management consultant candidate

“Phone interview lasted about 10 minutes. Not many questions asked. Interviewed with two people simultaneously next. ALOT of textbook questions asked. Some of the harder ones: “Name a situation in which a professional criticized you” “name a situation in which a peer criticized you” “describe a time you showed a lot of integrity.” Very few, if any, related to the job description at all. Be well prepared for this one. Still have not had a harder interview. Surprising, considering the job I interviewed for was the easiest job I have interviewed for since graduating.” -account manager candidate

“They are looking for someone who is very competitive and can reach goals for this position. If theres anyway you can showcase that I would. One of the managers asked me typical interview questions like “When was a time you hit the wall?” and “How would you change that situation now?” Another one was “What drives you?”. They asked me to do a short sales pitch which I researched the Elevator Pitch and made a short 2 min. description in laymens terms of the products and company. Download the trial, everyone asked if I had used the CRM products before.” -sales representative candidate

“The interviews were a very insightful process that took over 5 hours to complete. A bit of a marathon. Overall a challenging interview process, as should be expected from a category leading company. However the interviewers seemed to be obsessed over my Excel skills, data mining analysis capabilities or my experience with firing people.” -Amazon marketing candidate

“HR and Hiring manager were very professional and pleasant on the first two phone interviews. Hiring manager interview was mainly around my background and experience and going through work listed in my resume. HR was very behavioral interview, I felt that they were trying to get a feel of what type of a person I am. After that I was referred to a Gallup interview, 2 hours of personality questions, but it went by pretty fast. Then I was invited for an onsite interview. I met with a total of 14 people, they try to have as many people as possible see you to be able to give their feedback. Overall an excellent experience, and they move pretty fast too!!” -engineering candidate

“Advice to those braving an interview: READ THE WEBSITE, in and out…all 100+ pages if you really want the job Be able to give a detailed answer for every question they ask, no matter how trivial. They are not satisfied with the typical brief interview responses. Have at the very least 5 GOOD questions for each person you are scheduled to meet with. All 3 people I met asked numerous times if I had any questions, and seemed displeased if I said no. Carefully read through all tests they send you, and memorize your results- they will ask what you thought of the test, its accuracy, etc, and will ask you to explain your answers Be prepared for the unexpected…they have a very lax dress code, will record everything from the minute you step on the property” -client services coordinator candidate

“The interviews consisted of many case questions. I was not an exact fit for the role because of my experience with different financial systems, but the interviewers liked me and the recruiters have asked me to interview for other similar positions. I found a job at another company, but I would say eBay has their act together for the interview process.” -finance manager candidate

“The questions were less about my experience and more analytical math questions, at a rapid fire pace. Any how that was the most difficult process I have ever seen especially when the questions did not really fit the job description or my qualifications.” -marketing manager candidate

“I think, in the end, while I was really passionate about the issues around education inequality in our country, the experience just wasnt for me. And they saw that. You really need to look before you leap on this one. Do your research, make sure this is something youd really want, and get lots of second opinions before deciding to go ahead with this.” -corps member candidate

“2 rounds of behavioural interviews. Key was to show how you think, that you have an analytical mind. Expressing interest in company was a big help. 2 round did have minor financial skills questions. interviewers are particularly interested in leadership and achievement. i gave several examples of both. offer came about a week later over the phone.” -financial analyst candidate

“One of the questions was something like: “Suppose we want to assign salesmen for our drug to various regions around the country. How will we go about this to maximize profit?” We were given something like 200 salesmen to assign to one of 300 or so different regions. We have a list of how profitable a salesman will be in each region, so clearly we just assign the salesmen to the top 200 most profitable regions on the list. Now suppose we can assign up to 2 salesmen to each region, and that the first salesman will always be more profitable than the second in any given region– well, we simply update our list to contain entries indicating the profit that the second salesman will receive in each region, when 2 salesmen are present, and we again pick the top entries of our list.” -operations research associate candidate

“The interview questions were much more challenging than most companies certainly. However the corporate culture seemed to turn me off by my second interview. My second interviewer was an old timer at the company and had a “I hate working at this place, and I hate having to waste my time interviewing you” type of air; he also gave me a sense that I wasnt an adequate candidate five minutes into the interview; he even left the room while I was working on his problem.” -software engineer candidate

“I was flown out to Chicago for the final round of interviews. It consisted of 4 or 5 interviews (mixture of cases, guestimations, behavioral, and experience) and a 3 hour skills assessment. The skills assessment tests your proficiency in Access, VBA, and ADO. Its pretty basic if you are proficient, but the extreme time constraint made exponentially harder. All in all, nice people and a fair process. Be extremely prepared for Case interviews and the Skills Assessment.” -data analyst candidate

“Preparing is an absolute must. I know many people do not prepare, but I certainly did and I performed much better because of it. Also remember that doing case studies at home is not the same as doing the studies in an interview. Make sure you time yourself and put yourself in stressful conditions.” -consulting analyst candidate

“The cases are very difficult, but what you would expect going into an interview with Bain. I was able to make it to second round of interviews and was met with an overall positive experience. I would recommend doing as many practice cases as you possibly can.” -associate consulting candidate

“They asked me to walk through my resume first. (Just be confident with whatever you put on your resume.) At the end, you are asked a simple brain teaser. I failed the third round phone interview with a trader. I got stuck at one problem and that trader lost his patience on me.”
