College comedy audiences are… “Kids that are afraid they will be shot in their own schools. What has happened to us?”
Listen, 2018 has maybe not been the best year on the books—and as long as the news cycle continues, comedy queen Amy Poehler is letting the world know she doesnt have time for light Q&As. The Parks and Recreation creator was recently named one of the most powerful people in comedy by The Hollywood Reporter alongside other greats like Julia Louis-Drefyus and Tina Fey, but she had a few thoughts to share.
Instead of entertaining the questions, she used her platform and her beyond-candid answers to shed light on important issues that are incredibly worthy of our continued attention, like Hurricane Maria’s devastation in Puerto Rico, mass shootings in schools, and environmental tragedies.
In addition to a short blurb covering each honorees comedy cred, the editors of THR asked each professional funny person to participate in a light Q&A-style interview. Some comedians delivered with expected answers, but Poehlers answers were a little different.
Poehler’s friend and former Saturday Night Live castmate Rachel Dratch loved how her fellow comedian handled the matter and thoroughly endorsed her answers on Twitter: “Amy Poehler was named one of the 40 most powerful people in comedy and her answers to these questions are genius: (Also before you bust me out- I realize my battery is on 4%)”
Okay. So. Amy was just named one of the Hollywood Reporter’s most powerful people in comedy.
And this is 201 It’s not great!

And for the grand finale, Question #8, and the conclusion of her stirring, guns-blazing interview, THR asked for Poehlers comment on, “the funniest thing about the Trump administration?” *Pause for dramatic effect* “Are you kidding me?” she said, and then everyone was left in silence to ponder (and tweet about) her greatness.More like this
Tons of fans have been particularly supportive of her answer to Question #7, which was “Sitcom youd reboot?” The actor answered, “Mr. Rogers. I miss him. We need him.” So pure. And agreed. Amy Poehler, wont you be my, wont you be my, wont you be my neighbor?
One fan wrote, “Amy Poehler is the only kind of grown-up I want to be,” and like, who among us is not screaming, “same” right now? “Amy Poehler is the only person that matters,” another fan said, and “Amy Poehler is a legend and a gift,” from one more. The love for Poehler on Twitter right now is absolutely endless.
THRs Question #2: “Dream product endorsement.” Poehlers answer? “A giant whale just died in Thailand after eating 80 plastic bags.” Record scratch. She did not come to play, mentioning the devastating news reported by several news outlets on June 4.
In an introduction to the article that would unknowingly become kind of hilariously ironic, THR wrote that, “[maybe] it’s the unfunny state of the world or the emergence of global star-making platforms like Netflix, but audiences are devouring comedy these days.” The recent rise in comedy consumption is probably due to a little bit of both, but Poehlers interview answers were directly reflective of the former, and served to remind readers just how unfunny the world can be.
